You might ask: why so early? If you’re a fan of the holiday season like I am, and already blasting Christmas songs since November 1st, you shouldn’t need to explain yourself. However, there are several other advantages to planning your holiday outfits early. Many Christmas and holiday parties are happening in late November or early December in St Andrews, and you can get some sweet Black Friday deals and avoid buying later under pressure. Besides, during exam time one does not have the time for that (except dreamily filling online shopping carts that never get ordered to procrastinate studying) and suddenly it’s all over again. Therefore, here are some pointers that hopefully get you into an early joyful mood!

Sparkly and Feminine

If you believe the Lifetime Christmas movies, the traditional outfit should feature the colours Christmas tree green and Santa-red and, to align yourself with your room decorations, as many bows as possible. Midi skirts, braids and blouses are a popular choice and these days, sequins and metallics have become a holiday favourite as well.  Just look at Emilia Clark’s sparkly Valentino gown at her recent Christmas movie premiere. Especially if you want to mix up fabrics, a melange of sparkle and fuzzy, or even velvet always works well and nothing spells comfy, cosy, yet elegant quite like smooth velvet or velour.  These may be classics, but they never fail to deliver cheer and fashion, and are suitable for family gatherings and going out with your hometown and high school friends that you haven’t seen in ages!

If Christmas is too 50s and colourful for you, do not fret! The good news is delivered by Dior’s 2019-2020 Haute Couture show that introduced sexy, yet sophisticated ensembles with velvet, lace and satin fabrics, predominantly in darker tones. So, if you are a black-on-black kind of person, there’s no need to change your style during the holidays. A dark turtleneck and pencil skirt combo will always be effective. Add a blazer, and the outfit is complete. Those are also always a good choice, giving an air of confidence and demand respect, as seen on Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. Light shoulder pads can also be spotted more and more these days. However, even the dark sets can get a final festive touch. While brooches used to be an accessory only worn by the elderly and conservative, their creative comeback in recent year leaves you with a huge selection of festive sparkle.

If you’re anything like my brother, your holiday apparel might only consist of one or two pairs of sweatpants and if you don’t want to put too much effort in any further outfits, your solution is simple: a bow tie. Patterned, colourful, a combination of different fabrics or sparkly, there is a broad variety to choose from! Same goes for suite trousers that look daring with a tartan pattern or brighter colours. If you want to go a step farer, you can also try a velvet blazer with satin lapels.

Even for this angelic time, this stays true. As part of any autumn/ winter wardrobe over knees are a clear given, be it as boots or stockings. As far as patterns are concerned, tartan always looks cute on skirts and scarves, especially if you’re keen on showing some Scottish pride. Suit trousers and shorts are also a more and more common outfit among women, and they contrast elegantly in combination with a lace blouse. Tweed sets in general are also a nice choice for men and women alike. And to top it off, the festive season is one that lets you use the shiny eye shadows of your palettes without restriction, so go all out on those shiny and glimmer eyelids!  Furthermore, you can keep it more casual with sweater dresses, combining them with different tights. Tights with unusual patterns also give the finishing touches on various skirt-shirt combos, as prominently featured on Gossip Girl.
