Maiah tells us about her favourite looks this February inspired by Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day may be over, but this time of year is one of my favourite fashion months.  February is a time where I find myself breaking out colours (mainly reds and pinks), silhouettes, and feminine styles I wouldn’t normally sport the rest of the year, and is the perfect time to begin transitioning a winter wardrobe to a flirty, floral, and whimsical wardrobe for spring.  Here are a few outfit ideas to inspire you for the rest of this month and (hopefully with warmer weather on the horizon), the upcoming spring season.

1. Playful & Pink

One of my go-to looks these past few weeks has been dungarees.  They are so easy to pair with anything, whether it is a light t-shirt (for those stuffy library days) or a thicker jumper for a brisk walk around town.  I like my dungarees to be a looser, relaxed fit so I can be as comfy as possible. Pair them with an adorable pink t-shirt with puffed sleeves for a feminine touch, comfy trainers, and some patterned socks to brighten up your day.

2. Dressed Up (Or Down)

Long gone is the season of the LBD – instead, it’s time to bring out the Little Red Dresses.  Find one that suits your style, whether it’s a casual wrap dress with a dainty print, or a solid classic coloured dress that can be paired with tights and heels.  Pair a classic solid red dress with some sheer polka dot tights and a black heel for a date night.  For a gal’s night, sport a flirty floral wrap dress with the same versatile black heels.  Mix and match what suits you for a perfect night out.

3. Sporty & Smart

Combine a monochromatic all-white look with a classic coat for a look that is slightly sporty but perfect to rock up to a tutorial in.  The chunky sweater and corduroy skirt will keep you warm while the tortoise-shell specs and platform sneakers with rose-gold accents still make the look put-together.  Topped off with a preppy toggle coat with red accents, you’ll be ready to take on the wind and the weather that continues to hit St Andrews this winter.

4. Bright & Brisk

With the storms Ciara and Dennis recently hitting our favourite seaside town, the weather has certainly been temperamental in the past few weeks.  I’ve recently been wearing my raincoat non-stop, and having one in a bright crimson colour like the one below brightens up my day just a little bit amidst the stormy weather.  For a relaxed look that can brave the wind and rain, pair a bright, waterproof trench coat with some loose wide-legged jeans.  Tuck a puff-sleeved jumper into your jeans for a sweet silhouette and pair the look with warm socks and some versatile boots like Blundstones.  (I will personally vouch for Blundstones – I’ve worn through two pairs and the heeled ones are a must-have.)

5. Fit For A Fashion Show

With so many fashion shows (and other events) coming up this semester, it’s a good idea to have a go-to outfit for each one.  I unfortunately have a habit of picking out an outfit about an hour before an event, so this year I hope to a be just a smidge more prepared.  Pair a dress with a delicate print such as hearts or flowers and a feminine silhouette like milkmaid sleeves, a ruffled hem, or midi length.  Look for dresses in hues like pink, blush, crimson, or burgundy.  Top it with a tan-coloured coat with a more masculine cut to balance out the dress and heels in the same nude colour.  I’m a big fan of matching coats and shoes to balance out the whole look, and tan is the perfect colour this season rather than black – it’s just as versatile but a little easier on the eye.
