Raise a Glass to Arnold Palmer (1929-2016)

Dominic Nolan bids farewell to a golfing icon.

This week we have had to say goodbye to the sporting legend: Arnold Palmer. Palmer died on Sunday at the age of 87, and touching tributes have come from across the world paying respect to one of the sport’s greatest stars. 

Long-term professional rival Jack Nicklaus declared that “Arnold transcended the game of golf. He was more than a golfer or even great golfer. He was an icon. He was a legend. Arnold was someone who was a pioneer in his sport. He took the game from one level to a higher level, virtually by himself.”

During his career spanning over fifty years Palmer won over 90 tournaments including seven major championships. Here in the Home of Golf we may see many sports stars, celebrities and royals pass through our midst, but few are as deserving as Arnold Palmer of this town’s praise. What he achieved for the sport of golf entertained fans around the world and brought their eyes to The Kingdom for a true spectacle.

I was surprised only to learn upon his death that Palmer leaves behind a popular beverage bearing his name. The Arnold Palmer is a drink comprising of iced tea and lemonade, a concoction that he would carry around with him on the course.

While Palmer himself reportedly enjoyed it with a far greater amount of iced tea than lemonade it can easily be adjusted to suit those with more of a sweet tooth. This non-alcoholic drink seems perfect for enjoying on a summer’s day or over lunch, but if it takes your fancy the next time you’re in Westport or the Beacon Bar you can add a splash of vodka to make the John Daly (named after another pro-golfer).

The week began on a sour note, but Palmer leaves behind sweet memories. Let us raise a glass to our honorary Saint.
