Celebrate St Andrews with a Classic Ceilidh

The Fellowship will take over Market Street for a day of dance.

The weather may be cold, but wool coats and exuberant dancing are precisely the things that will make you warm. For the second year in a row, the Fellowship of St Andrews has worked in conjunction with the St Andrews Partnership to present the largest ceilidh in town.

In addition to watching the ever-present Christmas lights get switched on, we can celebrate St Andrew’s Day a bit early (officially the Saint’s feast day is November 30). Combined with Christmas Ball, the ceilidh will help make this weekend the most quintessentially St Andrews one of the semester.

Guests are advised to wear sensible shoes, considering the rambunctious nature of a ceilidh and of Market Street’s cobbled stones. The street will be closed off to cars, allowing us to dance freely to the tunes of The Kilrymont Ceilidh Band.

Perhaps most notably, Principal Sally Mapstone will be opening the festivities at 18.30, shortly after the Christmas lights switch-on. This address will be one of her first public speeches in St Andrews, and possibly the first time many students will hear her speak. Once take home tests have been submitted and library books returned, everyone is encouraged to get caught up in the crowd on Market Street.
