On Thursday 6 July, fire services were called to the Purdie Building.

Fire services were called to the Purdie Building on North Haugh at 2 am on Thursday morning, following calls regarding a fire on its roof. Four fire engines, consisting of over twenty firefighters rushed to the scene within minutes of the alarm being raised by the University’s security staff.

Two of the fire crews came from the town’s own fire station, later followed by two crews from Cupar. The fire was found to “have broken out in a mechanical extraction system,” therefore a “powerful water jet” was needed to extinguish it. The fire did not spread further than the roof space.

By 5.39 am, the four-storey building was safe again. Fire services left the scene just before 6am.

A spokeswoman from the University commented on how the “incident was quickly controlled”, and therefore suffered little damage. No one was injured. The building, which houses the School of Chemistry, is close to Agnes Blackadder Hall, a large student population, as well as other science and computing buildings.
