The top five costumes seen this year were original and well executed.
1. Catching the crowd’s attention, a moving throne processed through the streets carrying Queen Cersei Lannister. The whole academic family was dressed up as the cast of Game of Thrones, carrying their mom on a throne through the street. The kids chanted “winter is coming” in unison, bringing smiles from ear to ear as the happy audience applauded and shrieked with enthusiasm. Let’s just say the grapes couldn’t hold a candle to the Game of Thrones procession.
2. In second place, a large academic family proceeded to march down College Street dressed as prisoners, carrying a member of the family on an air-mattress suspended in the air. The costumes themselves were very mediocre, but the sheer execution – carrying a girl throughout the streets on a blue air mattress – made them a memorable crowd favourite, standing out.
3. Creating a ripple effect of laughs and giggles, two boys walked proudly down Market Street, decked out as our beloved “South Street” and the dreaded “PH,” holding bottles of beer. South Street was tattooed with Zizzi’s and grasped tequila, all memories pertinent to the South Street we know and love. The “PH” was dressed in all black – really showing the dread and little dance we all know too well avoiding the pesky brick PH under Sallies tower.
4. The Cards Against Humanity children were incredible. Decked out in cardboard with sayings relating to academic incest and St Andrews-based references, the level of thought and humour those parents used to create the costume definitely secured it a place on the top five list.
5. Arguably one of the funniest costumes, about six children were dressed up as playboy bunnies: full black dresses, tight black shirts and jeans, with bunny ears to top it off. They were marching along carrying a fake tomb stone saying “Hugh Hefner”. Due to its relevance and the quick minds of those parents, the bunnies claim the fifth best costume of the 2017 Raisin parade.
Raisin 2017 definitely set some high standards for next year’s mummies and daddies. Hopefully they can also bring it with the outfits and keep this tradition as thrilling, comical, and only slightly politically correct. Congrats mums and dads, you did it and claimed another successful year of welcoming the freshers to university in the St. Andrean fashion.
