How to Successfully Pack for a Trip

Not sure what to pack for your upcoming spring break travels?

As everyone is well aware, spring break is finally here. This hopefully means that you will be departing from St. Andrews for some period of time. Whether you are going home, somewhere warm, or spending a couple days in Edinburgh, packing for your trip is unavoidable. What you want to avoid however, is packing the morning after going out, still drunk with twenty minutes until the taxi comes (I speak from experience). You also want to pack successfully so that you aren’t wearing the same two shirts your entire trip. Therefore, follow these simple tips in order to avoid any wardrobe nightmare while on vacation.

First, bring your passport. Nothing quite like getting to the airport without your passport and then having to explain to your parents why you won’t be seeing them.

It’s spring break, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it is going to be warm where you are going. Check the weather. It may not be 100% accurate but it will give you an idea of what type of climate you will be dealing with. This way, you aren’t the idiot wearing Bermuda shorts when its eight degrees Celsius and windy.

Next, know what kind of places you are going. Do you have a nice dinner? Are you going clubbing? Afternoon tea? Hiking? All of this means that you will have to pack the right clothing or else it will be super awkward. No one wants to be that guy who’s wearing flip flops on a 10-kilometer hike. Plan ahead.

Also, if you’re anything like me I am almost always above the weight limit for my luggage. At a certain point, this is unavoidable. However, to try and reduce the possibility of this occurring, wear layers when traveling. Always go to the airport wearing layers. First a shirt, then sweater, then coat. Not only does this increase the chances that you will be comfortable on the plane, but it also frees up space in your bag.

It helps to plan your outfits. Map out each day in your head while packing. If you are organized enough, try on each outfit to make sure that everything fits. There is nothing worse than trying a shirt on and realizing it doesn’t fit and you have to totally redo your outfit. This way, when you wake up you can just throw your outfit on and be on your way. It is almost a guarantee, regardless of where you are going, that you will need jeans. Packing jeans is easy and allows for you to rotate tops with little difficulty. Also, it is always worth bringing a sweater. Regardless of whether it will be nice and warm during the day, the chances that it will be cold at night is high and the last thing you want is to be freezing your ass off and have to go back. Shoes are always hard when trying to travel. I’d suggest bringing a neutral shoe. Something that is comfortable and will go with whatever you are wearing.

Finally, remember to bring underwear and socks. I think that’s pretty self explanatory.
