The Bop is a St Andrews institution. Who can forget the time they tried to change the name and it made national news?

Every week, hundreds of students flock to Club 601, hungry for some topical tunes: Taylor vs Kanye, Rainbow, and Shrek are amongst the iconic themes that have lent themselves to our humble Union. Each one has sent St Andreans to the shops in search of relevant costumes. For the lazy, the Union’s PR team can often be found on Market Street selling paraphernalia.

Lately, however, the Bop has suffered. Jurassic Bop lacked any cohesive decorative style, save for inflatable dinosaurs scattered throughout the room (admittedly, things picked up when the dinosaurs began crowd-surfing). But what the heck was Glow Bop? Galactica Bop? David Attenbop??? How do you even dress for that?

We understand that themes can be difficult. To this day, people wonder what the theme for Don’t Walk 2018 was – other than conspicuous consumption. It is especially difficult for the Union, as 601 must be decorated on Friday evening and cleaned by Saturday morning. Any Bop theme must be ephemeral. There will be no marquees going up in the Main Bar.

Bearing all of this in mind, I request that the Union have an Avicii Bop.

For anyone who does not know, Avicii is the reason you listen to EDM.* Born Tim Bergling, the Swedish DJ achieved record-breaking success as a remixer and producer from the age of 16. Although EDM had a niche in nightclubs, Bergling was the first to fuse dance music with the singalong pop quality that took it mainstream. His hit song “Levels” is considered one of the greatest EDM anthems in history: If you have ventured into any kind of drinking and dancing establishment within the past seven years, you have certainly heard it.

Similarly, most media-inclined individuals have heard Mike Posner’s “I Took a Pill In Ibiza,” which opens with the titular line, followed by “to show Avicii I was cool.” The line proved prophetic when, hardly a year later, Avicii retired from public performance due to severe health issues. In his late twenties, the DJ had both his appendix and gallbladder removed, a result of his excessive alcohol usage. Three days ago, on 20th April, he was found dead in Muscat, Oman.

Avicii’s music defines the way we dance; it defines nights out. In the days following his death, countless producers and DJs have paid tribute to him, citing him as both a friend and a powerful influence. Described by Kygo as “a musical genius,” by Diplo as “a groundbreaker and influencer to all [his] peers,” and by the Chainsmokers as “a hero,” he fundamentally changed the way the music industry operates. There is a trace of Avicii in every nightclub, at every house party, on every playlist.

So let’s have an Avicii Bop. We don’t even need a DJ – just queue up a playlist of Avicii and let it run. Disney is great, and everyone can get behind a good Masquerade, but these are filler Bop themes, suitable for deadline weeks or exam season. When the largest name in EDM music dies at 28 years old, every club in town should be involved in a tribute.
