AEPi’s annual charity beach run is coming up so read up on what it is, why it matters, and how you can help.

If you so happen to make your way to West Sands for a walk between Sunday and Thursday you’ll see an unusual sight: guys running up and down the beach and switching off at the top of the hour. They’ll be there at 4am, they’ll be there at 8pm, they’ll be there at 1pm, a different one almost every time. While this might look like some sort of intense sports training, it’s actually the AEPi annual Charity Beach run. The guys you will see running are brothers in the fraternity, all running to do their part in raising money for Anthony Nolan, a charity for blood cancer the boys have been running for since they started the run back in 2013.

This is the frat’s fifth year putting on the run, part of their work to help the greater community, and, in their opinion, one of the most important things they do. Since the creation of the chapter the boys have worked hard on their philanthropic side, they just wanted to make sure they could find the most unique way to do it. This was why, in 2013, they hit upon the idea of an annual beach run, a play on the famous Chariots of Fire run that was filmed on West Sands back in 2012. Ever since then AEPi has put on the run every year, upping the hours they have to run as the chapter has expanded and more brothers have looked to participate. It’s always been a great chance for the recent pledges to bond with their new brothers just as it is a great chance for old friends to make new memories. This year, in honor of the run’s five year anniversary, they will be running 100 hours continuously.

For the Master of the fraternity, Spencer Caminsky, the run is personal. It’s a great way to give back to his brothers, to St Andrews, and to the U.K. at large, something he’s very proud of. The run offers the brothers a chance to bond while doing philanthropic work, another facet of the run that Caminsky is particularly proud of. There isn’t too much fun about running along a beach in, what can only be described as incredibly cold, weather but the boys think that’s besides the point. It’s about raising money for Anthony Nolan. A fantastic charity, Anthony Nolan works to conduct groundbreaking research to improve the success rates of transplants and improve the lives of all people with blood cancer. It also works to pair those in need of a bone marrow transplant with a donor. So it’s about the reason they run, not so much that they run. This is a charity they have been supporting for the entire existence of the run and it is a charity they have worked hard to build ties with. Representatives of Anthony Nolan will even be coming to watch the run and speak to the brothers on Wednesday.

It is the desire to raise as much money as possible for such a great cause that has prompted the brothers to invite other St Andrews groups to run. Other societies (like the Stand!) such as Women for Women, Model United Nations, Jewish Society, Women in CS, and UNICEF; even a few of the sports clubs such as rowing, shinty, and swimming have scheduled themselves in to run for an hour along the famous beach. AEPi hopes that, with the help of these societies they will be able to reach their goal of £5,000.
