Poetry On The Rocks: No Rocky Event
Molly reviews the Lumsden Club’s poetry showcase.
Sandy’s Bar was overflowing, the air buzzing with energy and excited chatter as The Lumsden Club’s Poetry On the Rocks event commenced. The event was positively joyful, as every speaker seemed truly pleased to be sharing poetry with the audience. This is an art form we don’t see too often around St Andrews, and so this event, which showcased both the poems themselves and the delivery of them, was refreshing and inspiring to watch. After a stressful day of lectures and meetings, it was lovely to sit back and enjoy some beautiful poetry.
The majority of the poems were original works, which I was extremely shocked to learn, as I was expecting mostly recitations of famous works. A few notorious poems did make it in there (what would a poetry showcase be without Sylvia Plath and T.S. Eliot?), but most of the night was dedicated to the speakers’ own poems, which were all fantastic and traversed a range of emotions and themes – from grief, to heartbreak, to the interconnected gossip circles of St Andrews. Every poem was insightful and was read with such love; the poets were sharing a piece of their heart. And that was wonderful to witness.
One poet who I was particularly impressed by was Tallulah Hutson. Not only were her poems raw and rhythmic, the words flowing so melodically that I was left gaping at times, but her performance was also stellar. It showcased the emotions of each poem perfectly, and I was truly transported while she was speaking. Every single performer was excellent, but Hutson clearly has a knack for this. I can’t wait to read a book of her poetry one day.
The night ended with a flawless recitation of the infamous “Cynthia” poem from 22 Jump Street, which was positively, side-splittingly phenomenal. The event was entertaining and moving, and only left me wanting to hear more from the incredibly talented poets wandering about St Andrews. I hope the Lumsden Club hosts more of these nights in the future, because I will definitely be in attendance. And you should be too.
