A Mug and a Microwave

Wonderful things can come from the humble microwave.

When the drunchies call, it is impossible not to answer, but aren’t you tired of spending all your cash on cheesy chips? The kitchen is a formidable opponent when you are faced with its sharp knives and fire hazards. However, while operating an oven while drunk is unwise, a microwave is definitely doable. Here are some safe mug meals to make in the microwave when you are on a budget and want to stuff your face in the comfort of your own home.

Note: Make sure to use microwaveable mugs. Microwave times also vary on power of microwave and size of mug

Pizza in a mug

5 minute mug lasagna

 

While the pizza at our favourite late night establishments are good, £4 for a basic margherita is pretty steep. Try this pizza recipe instead and enjoy your cheesy goodness without spending all the cash.

You’ll need:

4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour

two pinches of baking power

pinch of baking soda

3 tablespoons of milk

1 tablespoon of olive oi

1 table spoons marinara sauce

1-2 tablespoons of mozzarella cheese

oregano or basil

Directions

  1. Add flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a mug and mix thoroughly
  2. Pour milk and oil and mix everything together. Lumps are okay, but try to get it as smooth as possible
  3. Spoon the marinara sauce over the batter
  4. Sprinkle the cheese and top and add as much herbs as you will like
  5. Microwave for 1 minute and 30 seconds
  6. Wait a minute to cool before enjoying

Microwavable Mac and Cheese

Mac and cheese is a classic, and for my Americans out there, I am sure we all miss good old easy-mac packages that the UK unfortunately lacks. This is the perfect solution when you are tired of ramen but can’t be bothered to make anything more complicated.

You’ll need:

Macaroni pasta (amount depends on mug size)

Water (amount depends on mug size)

4 tablespoons of milk

2 pinches of cornstarch

4 tablespoons of cheddar cheese, grater

salt and pepper

  1. For this recipe, a large mug is needed since the water needs to boil. Fill the mug to about ¼ full with the pasta and add water till it is about ¾ full In a
  2. Microwave for about 3 ½ minutes, or until the pasta is fully cooked
  3. Pour out the remaining water
  4. Stir the rest of the ingredients thoroughly and microwave for another 6 seconds
  5. Add salt and pepper to taste and enjoy right away

Chocolate Mug Cake

For those who have a sweet tooth, who prefer chocolate over curry sauce, this cake is quick and simple and is acceptable to also make when you aren’t drunk.

You’ll need:

3 tablespoons all purpose flour

3 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons cocoa power

¼ teaspoon baking power

3 tablespoons milk

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

splash of vanilla extra (optional)

3 tablespoons of chocolate chips

Directions:

  1. Put flour, sugar, cocoa, and baking power in a mug
  2. Stir with a fork thoroughly
  3. Add milk, vegetable oil and vanilla and mix until smooth
  4. Add chocolate chips
  5. Microwave on high for 90 seconds
  6. Cool for five minutes before eating
