Last month DONT WALK announced that they would be supporting The Rainforest Alliance and Families First as their two chosen charities for the 2020 show. Prior to this year, DONT WALK has released their charities much closer to the date of their show but, due to the disastrous forest fires in the Amazon they decided it was important to announce it sooner. Given the timing of the fires, DONT WALK decided that it was important to announce their charities earlier, reemphasizing the need to support such an organization.
For the 2020 show, they’ve donned the slogan ‘Another World is Possible’. It is clear through their creative theme that both the environment, and concern for the planets current state has inspired the organization. Given our location, Scotland has some of the most beautiful scenic landscapes in the world, which is not only artistically inspiring, but something that is important to preserve.
Why has DONT WALK chosen to support The Rainforest Alliance as one of their charities for the 2020 show?
“DONT WALK evolved from a desire to confront the issues that face our communities head on and to not walk by the contentions that blight our modern world. Nearly two decades since DONT WALK began, it seems appropriate to re-evaluate what our core mission is, and to confront the obstacles that are now central to our global community. We chose to work with Rainforest Alliance, and Families First for this exact reason. As the global climate crisis is now, more than ever at the forefront of our attention, it seemed right to use the international platform cultivated by DONT WALK to raise awareness and funds to support a cause so dear to the hearts of many who support DONT WALK. In light of the horrific fires in the Amazon Rainforest earlier this summer, we made the decision to announce our charity early, so as to highlight our commitment to environmental change”.
The fashion industries impact on climate change is undeniable. The exact data in terms of the effects of the fashion industry are on the environment are nearly impossible to calculate. However, it remains one of the top sectors in terms of dirtying the planet. Therefore, it is important that DONT WALK has chosen to support The Rainforest Alliance as they are aware of the consequences that fashion has on the planet and wish to respond to such issues on both a creative and charitable angle.
DONT WALK has also chosen to continue supporting Families First, a local charity that provides support for a variety of issues including domestic violence and problems with friends and family.
Why is Families First an important charity that DONT WALK continues to support?
“Families First remains a huge part of DONT WALK’s commitment to using our platform for social change. Fundamentally, the town of St. Andrews and our surroundings provide inspiration for us all, and it is this inspiration that has fostered he growth of DONT WALK over the years. It therefore seems right to give back to the community that has welcomed DONT WALK and our mission, and that we use our platform to fight structural inequality in our community”.
Drawing inspiration from both St Andrews and beyond the bubble, this years DONT WALK theme will be even more interesting than in the past as the charities seem to be even more integrated in the creative process than prior shows.
