Happy new year, Bonne année, Feliz año Nuevo, C новым годом, سنة جديدة سعيدة and 新年快乐 as we wave goodbye to 2016 and look forward to celebrating what’s to come.

While the last minute food shopping and get togethers with friends and family commences for one side of the world, the other half have already eaten their body weights, drank and celebrated before falling asleep. Cheers, Australia!

The Chinese calendar marks the year of the Rooster. For the superstitious amongst you, this year promises to bring “righteousness and justice, bombast and logistical efficiency.” As the sign of dawn and awakening, the year of the Rooster will be prosperous to those that endeavour to work hard, while using “quick wit and practical solutions.”

Meanwhile the science calendar has added an extra second to 2016 due to the Earth’s speed of rotation. Although it causes much havoc for scientific and economic circles, let us be grateful for the one sip of champagne that can last that second longer.

Upon reflection, the past year has had its share of tragedies. After a rough start with Harambe, we finished with the recent deaths of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, not to mention some of our most-loved performers: Alan Rickman, George Michael and David Bowie. Furthermore, 2016 will go down in history for its controversial political decisions: Brexit and the US Presidential Election.

Yet, as students of such an extraordinary university, we can look back and realise it wasn’t all bad. We’ve made many friends, met new people, achieved that grade we worked so hard for. In 2016, we created so many valued and happy memories. The University can look back at all its academic achievements this year and pride itself in ranking third best in the UK. In world news, the Cubs won the World Series, Hamilton premiered on Broadway, and a peace deal was reached in Cuba. All-in-all, we still have something to smile about.

While the “New Year, New Me” memes creep across the internet, it may be time to think about whether you want to change anything. While the all-so-popular resolutions of working harder, eating healthy and going to the gym remain a goal for many, you should think about what makes your adrenaline rush. Perhaps create a bucket list, whether it be raising money for charity in a bizarre way or contacting a long-lost friend. There would be no feelings stronger than looking back at the past year and thinking Wow, that made me happy. 

In whatever way we celebrate, all 120 nationalities that make up our student community are united by the notion of prosperity, peace and personal success. Let 2017 bring each and every one of you amazing achievements in whatever you endeavour!
