This past Thursday, St Andrews got a taste of Dublin a few days early with the largest-scale St Patrick’s Day event ever held in our town. Created by a new committee, the event promised cheap Guinness, a live band, and enough green to bring out the Irish in all of us.

Although crowded, the queues were significantly reduced thanks to the addition of a shot bar, located in the oft-underused back section of The Rule. The cash-only bar served shots and £2 pizza throughout the night. Future event organises ought to take note of the bar’s success, and incorporate a similar system moving forward.

Similar to Goat House, the spirit of the crowd contributed to the overall success of the night. Guests dressed in green shirts, hats, and dresses, many decorated in shamrocks and other symbols of Irish pride. The verdant setting matched the musical stylings of the band – The Wild Murphys, who put an Irish spin on an assortment of classic tunes. Guests spun and stomped until the closing song, which segued neatly into the mixing of DJ Ashton Squires. His throwbacks suited the ethos of the event: a cheesy, boozy night that avoided taking itself too seriously.

St Patrick’s Day proved that St Andrews is always game for something new. We can hope to go green again next year, as the event continues to grow.
