Four St Andrews Halls Named Best in United Kingdom

St Andrews emerges victorious in a national student accommodation survey.

A recent survey has revealed that four of the University’s accommodation have been named winners in the Student Accommodation Survey 2017.

Over 10,834 students across the UK took part in a survey which reveals which halls of accommodation really are the best. Despite the student population size of St Andrews being smaller than the number of those taking part in the survey, four halls of residence placed in the ranking. These halls include St Salvators, St Regulus, John Burnet Hall and McIntosh Hall.

While location, social life and wifi speed are amongst the most important factors for students, the criteria looked at by StudentCrowd included value for money, location, hall management, cleaning, social spaces, social experience and internet access.

The selected students taking part were asked to rank the seven aforementioned factors out of five stars. The survey ranked halls within the university itself, as well as placed them against all the other halls in the UK. Taking into account all the halls in St Andrews, the university placed seventh for accommodation. The University of Sheffield took first position, and our nearest university, Dundee, ranked third overall.

Having received five stars in all aspects, St Regulus Hall received first place out of all University halls in St Andrews. Thirty-two students reviewed the hall commenting on its excellent location at the end of Queen’s Gardens and the hall having the highest percentage of returning students. Other reviews included “I love love love love love love love this place!!” and “BEST HALL EVER!!” There was continuous mention of the generous amounts of alcohol that is given out at social events.

DRA / Fife Park did not rank highly.

St Regulus was followed closely by McIntosh Hall. With five stars in every aspect, except the 3 out of 5 star wifi, the hall received similarly excellent reviews commenting on the kind staff who “will listen and will take the time to get to know each student,” and the “2 minute walk away from the Student Union.” 

Fife Park ranked last in eleventh place out of all our university halls with just three out of five stars. Out of the 232 rooms available, only 6 students reviewed the property. Its highest marks of four stars went towards value for money, hall management, and common room spaces. While the social experience received a disappointing two stars. However, reviews of the accommodation mentioned the sorrow in it being torn down next year.

Out of all the halls of accommodation in the UK, St Regulus, McIntosh, John Burnet, and St Salvators ranked in the top fifty. Amongst these high ranking positions were Falkner Eggington Hall (Loughborough University), Nightingale Hall (University of Nottingham), and Josephine Butler College (Durham University).

The University of St Andrews Alumni Network shared the results on their Facebook page. Many of the alumni questioned some of the results and reminisced back to the times when they were studying at the University. Some continued to reference the halls to their former names such as “Atholl” and “Chattan” for John Burnett and McIntosh Hall, respectively.
