Capture Collective Hopes to Bolster the St. Andrews Community

Grace Sisel speaks to new student initiative, Capture Collective, about their upcoming exhibition and the ideas behind the project.

Earlier this year, second year students Alex Stephenson and Zoë Berkeley set up Capture Collective as an initiative to promote engagement with the visual arts in the local community. Seeking to bring together the town and students, their first art exhibition, “Ours,” is a collaborative effort with MUSA (Museum of St. Andrews) and the Fellowship, in celebration of the University’s valued public art collections.

The exhibition takes place this weekend, Friday 28th to Sunday 30th September from 10am to 6pm. Students and the public are welcomed to amble around the Old Wing Dining Room in University Hall to enjoy modern and contemporary artwork by Scottish artists – all for the price of your own generosity.

The exhibition is free; however, Capture Collective encourage visitors to make a donation to their chosen charity, The Teapot Trust. The Teapot Trust is a charity which provides hospitalised children with chronic illnesses with professional and restorative artwork therapy at Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital, an aim that fits suitably within the parameters of Capture Collective’s efforts to build a stronger community through art. Director Alex Stephenson comments that the Collective feel especially connected to this organisation since “art is such an important factor for letting us process our progressive thought”.

Capture Collective worked to gather and curate an array of interesting pieces from University Hall’s collection by a variety of Scottish artists ranging from Elizabeth Blackadder to Alberto Morocco. As a former resident of University Hall, Creative Director Zoë Berkeley highlighted the artworks’ significance in regards to St. Andrews, the University and more specifically towards University Hall itself:

“The works provide an honest representation of where we come from… and where we hope to go forward”.

Furthermore, Capture Collective wish to reach beyond the notion of the project being simply another art exhibition:

“Ours is all about bringing together the public: the idea of sharing and that we’re sharing our space, town and gown together. We share it physically and we want to share the fun parts as well – we’re thinking about what we can do and give to the town, and what it gives back”.

“Ours” emphasises the notion of community through its name alone, highlighting its endeavours to create a stronger community between faculty, students and residents through a shared interest and enjoyment of art. So this weekend, do take the time to spend a few moments of your day to browse the artworks and enjoy some local culture – all whilst contributing to Capture Collective’s community efforts.

‘Ours’ takes place on the 28th-30th September, from 10am – 6pm each day, at University Hall.
