Here are a few additional ways to work out in St Andrews…

Ladies and gentleman, people of St Andrews, I speak before you today as a fellow un-athletic, un-coordinated student whose only form of exercise is the ‘hike’ to lectures and tutorials, or the occasional and ever-promising drunk run down Market Street on a Friday night. Like most of you, I bought an incredibly over-priced gym membership in September, knowing full well I would never use, but thought, ‘Hey! You never know right?’ Well, I knew.

Yet after Spring Break I started to WANT to exercise (crazy, I know), but I felt so uncomfortable at the gym and I wasn’t the only one. So after talking with a few friends about their annoying gym experiences, I decided to write this article detailing four additional ways to get fit in St Andrews outside of the AU. So, this one’s for you and I hope you enjoy:

  1. Fife Coastal Path – For those of you who have yet to run (or walk) on this path, it is BEAUTIFUL. I have never seen better views ―or sweatier people― running in the morning. While although it’s a popular and sometimes crowded way to exercise in St Andrews, I highly recommend. Whether you run a 100 meters, a mile, or a 5k, a walk on the beach will forever be the perfect way to warm-down after an intense workout, especially at sunrise or sunset. But also, no matter what time of the day it is, this path will always be accessible and populated so don’t worry about safety and just enjoy the run.

  2. 7 Minute Workouts – As a student, our lives are incredibly busy with academics, extracurriculars, sports, etc., so finding the time to walk to the gym is difficult to say the least; but finding seven minutes is not. A short work out every day can truly make a difference not only in your appearance, but also in your mental health. Knowing that you have accomplished some form of exercise each day is impressive, no matter how long it was for. In this method, you choose where, when, and how you exercise without having to worry about others watching you; I mean let’s face it, no ones attractive when they exercise.

  3. Outdoor Gym Equipment – At the end of East Sands is a small outdoor gym with a range of equipment free to use any time of the day. While although it’s a bit small and in a public area, it’s FREE! You can face the beautiful coastal view provided by our one true love, Scotland, while using one of the pieces of equipment. Also, the wind is practically free A/C! What’s better than that?

  4. Additional Gyms – Most of us don’t realize that there are several additional non-university gyms in our small town. For example, The View Studio on the Scores, Functional Fitness on Largo Rd, and Hot House Yoga on Largo Rd are great places to visit if you’re looking for something a bit more private. However, all of these locations cost more than the university gym so while although they’re nicer, they will cost a pretty penny.

Overall if you put your mind to it, exercising in St Andrews isn’t too bad. This was just a short list of additional ways to exercise outside of the university gym, but there are plenty of others so get creative! If you’re having trouble finding motivation then convince a few friends to join. But remember, we all work out differently, and no one form of healthy living is better than the rest, so do what makes you happy, comfortable, and inspired!
