Thursday night played host to the launch party for one the most anticipated events on the St Andrews social calendar, Under Canvas. A student-run charity event that raises money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Under Canvas is St Andrews’ one and only music festival. Known for the electric atmosphere and unforgettable music talents, Under Canvas will continue to take over St Mary’s Quad to bring St Andrews an evening that hits between traditional music festivals and classic garden parties. The launch was a hit, and shows that the main event will garner even more interest than last year.

While committee and press poured in to 1 Golf Place at the start of the evening, most guests arrived fashionably late in what ended up being an amazing turn out. As students waited for the event to kick off, they took full advantage of the discounted drinks and chatted around the bar, until the DJs turned up the bass and music quickly filled the room. While there was still room, early guests took to the dance floor and starting throwing moves that would rival Michael Jackson.

The incredible music of the night, courtesy of SOUL PATCH and DJ SAUNIT, gave guests a preview to the eclectic tastes that make up Under Canvas. The music certainly kept guests packed on the dance floor, and could be heard down the street by passers-by who weren’t lucky enough to attend. As guests took much needed breaks from the floor, they could be seen moving towards the crowded bar. Despite the lack of space, as I could barely move two inches without bumping into someone, the launch provided a fun night of good music, great vibes, and a preview that has everyone anticipating the arrival of Under Canvas.

If ever there was a fault in the night, I found that it was in the overcrowding, mainly because it made my attempts at dancing even more questionable than usual. Regardless, the night was a blast and I’m looking forward to seeing what Under Canvas will bring to the table come April. With commitment to such a great cause and the hopes of adding to an already sizeable donation for the CF Trust, I hope everyone had an amazing evening and is anticipating this year’s main event as much as I am. I have no doubt that Under Canvas will be even better than last year after the fantastic evening this year’s committee put on. The excitement of guests was obvious, and as we draw closer to the festival, it’s clear that everyone is keen to #getunder
