Returning for another year of drunken revelry, rugby players from all over Scotland and St Andreans looking for a good night out flocked to Kinkell Byre following the annual Rugby 7’s competition. The afterparty was sponsored by SCRUM, Scotland’s only rugby publication.
Guests were greeted with strong tunes and a dance floor played by multiple classic St Andrews acts–Sunta und die Klauses, DJ Flo, and DJ Joe Jones—along with techno newcomers Tek-Yes.
At the beginning of the night, DJ Joe Jones took control of the dance floor, creating a great vibe for those ready to dance or at least just to listen to while queues at the bars piled up. The night processed as DJs changed and people moved in and out of the venue. If guests needed a couple moments of quiet, the Blackhorn food truck was parked just outside and in an area quiet enough for people to hang out and socialise with rugby players from other universities visiting St Andrews.
While the night began with great energy and drunken revelry, it soon fell flat. Unfortunately the fabled WKD rodeo bull did not make an appearance so the only activities for party-goers were drinking, eating Blackhorn, and dancing.
It easily got boring to fill four hours of time with just this. Personally, it felt like Sinners had just been transferred to Kinkell Byre. This event was absolutely great for a wild night out, however it easily became tiring and the queue to get a bus back to town began filling up just after midnight.
While this event was great as evidenced by tickets selling out within two days of in person ticket sales, if you don’t have any connection to rugby at our university, it’s one to skip.
