The time of year has come where another ball in our favourite seaside university town has rolled around. This year, the Kate Kennedy Charity May Ball presents a lively event at Kinkell Byre, “with stunning views of the sunset over St Andrews Bay,” and “fairground attractions and live bands.” It is quite possibly one of the university’s most popular end-of-the semester events, and not to be missed. The only problem now, is deciding what to wear.
Spring is a perfect time to bring out the lace, a delicate and feminine textile that is sure to stand out without being too garish. From tiny needlepoint accents to large lace appliqués, there are a variety of dresses and jumpsuits sporting lace in little or large amounts. And if there are any spring and summer events coming up (like weddings!) you can definitely rewear your lace attire.
Of course, the obvious choice for a spring event are floral prints. From dainty ditsy prints to large watercolour florals, dresses that sport floral prints come in a variety of styles and designs. Floral can also be easily paired with lace, for the best of both worlds for a spring outfit.
In order to dance the night away, ditch the black or glitter stilettos that were popular in winter, and opt for a comfortable yet cute pair of espadrilles. They come in so many styles and colours right now, and you really can’t go wrong. Check out Castañer, Soludos, and Office for some really great pairs.
For the gents, pick a bowtie, necktie, or pocket square that sports a unique print to stand out from the classic black suit or tux. A few of my favourite that I’ve seen are gingham, floral, seersucker, and even batik.
Tortoiseshell accessories were brought back last year, and seem to be all the rage now, for both guys and gals. From a smart pair of tortoiseshell glasses, a simple tortoiseshell barrette, or a pair of oversized earrings, they are sure to add some class to any simple outfit.
Tassels are a great way to add a bit of extra ‘oomph’ and flair to an otherwise plain outfit. They look great as statement earrings (H&M and New Look has some great choices) and as accents on loafers or other dress shoes.
So go forth, put your best (dancing) foot forward, and head off to the ball!
