After almost two years of having nowhere but your house to wear your favourite outfits, festival fashion is making a comeback and Starfields served some looks worth talking about. Luckily, Scotland decided to treat St Andrews students this year and it was relatively warm the weekend of Starfields allowing us to ditch our coats and throw on Summer attire (even swimsuit tops!). From vibrant funky patterns to monochrome matching sets, all the looks at Starfields had one thing in common: individuality. The great thing about festival fashion is that you have the opportunity to dress outside of your comfort zone while wearing an outfit that gives a real sense of your style – I can guarantee that the looks at Starfields 2021 did just that.
Serena Sandweiss, a member of the FS fashion committee, did not disappoint with her 70’s inspired multi-coloured matching set consisting of a long sleeve cropped top and a maxi skirt. Serena also styled this outfit with a pair of yellow-tinted sunglasses and rhinestones on her face. Her outfit was unique, funky, and flattering. Serena even went the extra mile and elevated her look with a matching headband; the coordination is unmatched. When asked about her outfit Serena told us “After a painful year of no festivals, I really wanted to wear something that would stand out. That is why I wore an outfit that had colourful and bright patterns. I am so excited to see funky patterns like this trending”.
Matching sets are a great go-to outfit and they dominated 2021 Summer fashion. Cecilia Lux proved this with her eye-catching Starfields look. Cecilia sported geometric print trousers and a matching button-down shirt pairing it with a simple white bikini top. Styling colourful and unique patterns can be difficult, but this outfit was executed perfectly creating a look that was chic and on theme with festival wear. The soft blue and white colour scheme of the set and 60’s inspired sunglasses were ideal for jamming at the sunny daytime session of Starfields.
Swimsuit tops were definitely put to use this year – India Berry styled her swimsuit top with a St Andrews twist. India Berry’s stunning glittery bikini top was paired with a gorgeous fur jacket, creating a jaw-dropping look. It is no secret that St Andrews just does fashion and festivals differently and this outfit was a prime example as it embodied elegance and festival fashion. India’s look was complete with body glitter, a timeless pearl necklace, and Doc Marten boots which work as great festival shoes as they are practical and stylish. Fur jackets are usually not considered a common festival garment but India’s fur jacket is a staple piece that created an extraordinary outfit (definitely a look to take notes on).
As I mentioned earlier, music festivals are the perfect place to express yourself and this is where flags and fashion come together. It is not often you see a flag complementing an outfit, but this look did just that. The colour scheme of both the shirt and the Irish flag naturally blended into each other creating a fashionable and individualistic look. Ilaria Belvin showed us how accessorizing can take an outfit to another level by adding an adorable mini diamante purse that fit perfectly with her abstract style top producing a trendy and high-fashion look.
Starfield attendees did not dress to fit in this year but instead dressed to stand out in the electrified crowd dancing to Jax Jones and Riton – not to mention Jax Jones’s killer statement hat. St Andrews is a town that is abundant with lively personalities and the variety of outfits at Starfields 2021 reflects this. Transitioning out of your favourite lockdown pajamas and back into festival fashion can be difficult but the creative looks at Starfields succeeded in setting a new tone for post-lockdown festival fashion.
