The Charities Campaign Carries the St Andrews Spirit
Our university’s official charities subcommittee was recognised at the 2016 RAG Conference.
Easily the most prolific of any local charity, the University of St Andrews Charities Campaign is the powerhouse behind RAG Week, Race2, and numerous student societies and events. Recently their efforts were lauded at the RAG Conference 2016, a celebration of student fundraising. Our very own Charities Campaign was shortlisted for two major awards, one of which Convenor Kristen Tsubota and Societies Coordinator Jamie Minns had the honour of accepting on behalf of the University.
Kristen described the victory as being “absolutely surreal.” Not only does this mark the first time the Charities Campaign has been shortlisted for a National Student Fundraising Award, but also the first time it has won. Up for both the Local Impact & Community Award and RAG Team of the Year (Medium), our Campaign received the former in recognition of its presence throughout our student body. As explained by Kristen: “Because all societal student fundraising funnels through the Campaign, our impact on the world truly goes beyond our wildest dreams. […] This is truly a University-wide initiative, and I’m so glad that our students are getting recognised for their work.”
The Local Impact & Community Award recognises a fundraising group that has successfully benefited the local community through an event or campaign. The judges considered community engagement, student perception, and university support, among other factors, during the selection process. The Charities Campaign is certainly victorious on all counts: Having raised £102,490.74 during the 2015 / 2016 school year, the Campaign fully engaged the entire student body with a year-long lineup of eclectic events. The Fife Food Festival, Christmas Fayre, Masquerade Ball, and Battle of the Bands all exemplified the reach of the Campaign, as multiple subcommittees and volunteers worked in unison to organise our town’s largest fundraising initiative.
We can expect the Charities Campaign to continue in their successes with this year’s returns of Fife Food Festival, Catwalk, Masquerade Ball, and many more excellent events.
