Did you get a fright? Thought so.

So Halloween’s coming up, and I’m sure you’ve all got plans. This could range from watching a scary movie and consequently not being able to go to the toilet alone for a week, to going out on the sesh and getting terrifyingly pissed. Whatever tickles your pumpkin. Regardless, I’m sure you’ve got a great costume lined up, and if you don’t, because you’re too cool for all that ‘Americanised shit’, well you’re just boring. But then again, I don’t blame you. Coming up with the perfect costume is a tricky business; you want to be SHOCKING yet PC, BOLD but WITTY, SCARY yet… SEXY?

We’ve all seen it. The notorious ‘sexy [insert literally any noun here]’ costumes, and every single year, the debate arises as to whether or not it is appropriate. Well, don’t worry – this isn’t going to be yet another one of those articles because quite frankly I don’t have an opinion. I also know that irrespective of what anyone says, people are never going to want to stop feeling sexy. If hidden behind a costume one night of the year is the way for you to feel that, then you go for it. I mean it’s never flattering to take it too far, since a little modesty is always sexier than looking trashy. But that’s my opinion that I just said I wouldn’t give.

Anyway, despite what anyone says about it, no matter how many YouTube and Facebook rants are posted on the matter, sexy Halloween costumes are here to stay. So let’s deal with it. Let’s make sexy safe. What I mean by this is that on Halloween (and indeed any other time) when people are out drinking, dancing and having a good time, they shouldn’t have to feel intimidated or hassled – I mean come on, they’re only out to drink jager and eat chips and cheese.

Yet in my experience, all too often a fun night out can quickly turn into a really nerve-wracking experience (and not in an enjoyable, Halloweeny way). In making the following point, I do not in any way intend to bash men. This situation can go both ways! But I am writing from a female perspective based on both my own personal experience and those of my friends.

Why is it that as soon as you get into a bar and the clock hits half 9, it suddenly seems acceptable to touch and sexualise people? I mean fair enough, people have drinks and people get talking. There is nothing wrong with a bit of tipsy flirtation. But I’m referring to the people who take it too far, who see a person and instantly think because they’re out drinking and having a good time, they enjoy being grinded upon by a stranger. They don’t. It’s creepy.

If somebody clearly isn’t into talking to you, don’t take it personally. Everyone’s drunk and in a sporadic mood; attention is all over the place. Go dance for a bit, have a drink, chill out, stop trying to make the conversation go on and on. Nothing is less attractive than a clingy stranger in a bar. Often, in my experience, these situations can really ruin a night out.

But sometimes that’s not even it. I’ve seen people start to think it’s acceptable to shout out and get all touchy when it’s really not. I’m just chilling trying to do the cha cha slide here, I mean, leave me alone. You wouldn’t act like that in the street in the middle of the day, so don’t do it when you’re out partying. Treat people with respect, enjoy your night and let them enjoy theirs. It’s simple, yet so many people seem to turn into sex-crazed, pervs who get completely out of control the minute they’ve necked a pint of pablo. Don’t be that person. Your mum wouldn’t be proud.

So when the Halloween sesh finally comes, and you’re out in the bright lights and big city of St Andrews; compliment that girl dressed up as a ‘sexy [anything]’, even if only to celebrate the fact that she managed to survive the night in a miniskirt without getting hypothermia. Don’t make her feel like she’s in danger of losing her costume all together, because respect is always important, regardless of what you are wearing.
