Spotlight On… Hispanic Society

Sarah Dickins shares her experience within the Hispanic Society.

Hola a tod@s, from the University of St Andrews Hispanic Society! Spanish is mother-tongue to 470 million people across 20 countries and second language to many more. It will probably replace English as the most commonly spoken language in the USA within 50 years, if not sooner. In socio-economic terms, Latin America is one of the fastest developing regions in the world and Spain plays an increasingly important role on the European stage. The Hispanic Society believes that there has never been a better time to immerse yourself in the language and culture hispanohablante. Our membership and committee are mainly made up of Modern Languages students, native Spanish speakers and lovers of all things Hispanic – but all are welcome, whether you’re a salsa-dancing, Cervantes-reading wine connoisseur, or completely new to the Spanish-speaking world. 

As a society we try to host a range of both regular and one-off events throughout the semester. So far this academic year, the Hispanic Society has organised a wine tasting at Luvian’s, a Latino club night at the (sadly, now defunct) Lizard Lounge, and a meet-and-greet event for Spanish students thinking about options for their year abroad. Our regular events include weekly Spanish conversation classes, or Charlas, and society pot-lucks. We’re currently finalising the details for a further Latino club night and an evening of Spanish cinema. In the coming months, we’ll also be continuing our lecture series from last year, arranging public talks on Hispanic themes: from socio-economic issues in Latin America, to cultural transformation in Spain. All of our events are advertised and regularly updated on our Facebook page, but we can always be contacted via our university email address: [email protected]. Alternatively, pop along to any of our events and approach a member of the committee – we’re a friendly lot! 

Here at St Andrews, we are fortunate to have such a prestigious School of Modern Languages and highly multicultural student body. The Hispanic Society recognises this and maintains good working relations with the students and staff at the department of Spanish, as well as other Modern Languages and cultural societies. We have worked with the At Home and Abroad Society and are currently in collaboration with the Class Representatives for the department of Spanish. But our events are in no way exclusive to KY16! We regularly communicate with our friends at the Hispanic Society at Dundee Uni and are hoping to organise a Latino night with them later in the academic year.
