Appreciate all the local haunts.
There is no shortage of places to eat in St Andrews. Within the first few weeks of being here you’ll know your way around all the restaurants in town – but before you arrive here’s a quick guide of what’s on offer.
Let’s start with some of the more popular places to go. In no particular order:
Located about half way along Market Street, Forgan’s boasts a fairly broad menu with a good choice of slightly fancier meals. Just next door to Forgan’s is Mitchell’s, a deli and restaurant that is often more affordable than Forgan’s but in no way any less delicious. The menu here offers a slightly more Scottish feel, so if you’re looking for a way to try haggis for the first time then this is the place to go.
Of course if we’re talking about somewhere where money from the Bank of Mum & Dad can be wisely invested, The Adamson is where it’s at. A higher end experience will be had here, with some of the must luxurious local ingredients used to make the tastiest dishes you’ll find anywhere in town. More expensive, sure, but if you’ve got the money to spare and need to treat yourself after a particularly hard day, then book a table. Alternatively, Little Italy is another jewel hiding up Logies Lane. I cannot recommend this highly enough – although good luck getting a table any time soon.
So you’ve treated yourself now and that’s the student loan gone for another month, but you’re not quite done sampling what St Andrews has to offer. What now? The answer is simple: takeaway.
Blackhorn on Church Street sells some of the best burgers you’ll ever taste, with the meat provided by the local butcher Minick. There’s a reason this is a St Andrews staple, appearing at many balls throughout the year to provide that sweet, sweet post-drunken dancing goodness. If burgers aren’t for you then back on Market Street you’ll find Cromars and Tailend, the two fish and chip shops found in the centre of town. Both have reputations for doing some of the best fish and chips around but which one you prefer is down to you. Naturally while writing this I have to do my best to remain impartial (Go team Tailend!).
St Andrews town centre is also rich in cafes and pubs that sell some affordable but tasty food, ideal for a lunch time or a casual dinner. There are too many to go into detail, but to name a few: Bibi’s (you want the cake from here, I promise), Zest, The Vic, Greyfriars, The Rule and Rector’s Cafe. A quick wander round town and you’ll find these and many more.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the infamous Dervish, found on Bell Street and located far too conveniently near to both the Union, The Vic and many other pubs open until late. This is the home of drunk food in St Andrews and really, if you didn’t spend at least one night in Dervish at 3 am trying to get your chips and cheese during Freshers’ Week, did you really do Freshers’ right?
