St Patrick’s Day: More Green, More Guinness, More Great
The sellout St Paddy’s extravaganza will double in size for 2018.
Two days before dozens of British mainlanders flock to Dublin for the main event, St Andrews will once again host a Scottish celebration of all things Irish. Despite our collective love for St Patrick’s Day, students lacked a local outlet for their green-tinged spirit. As evidenced by last year’s sellout event, St Paddy’s was once a gap in the St Andrean market. This March, it will respond to growing demand with an even larger, greener event.
While the Rule suited the fledgling event’s balanced expectations, the second instalment has taken on the larger challenge of a new venue: The Rhynd, a fresh events space located a mere fifteen minutes from St Andrews. Described by the organisers as a “blank canvas,” the renovated farmstead houses up to 600 guests – thus far strictly wedding guests. Held on Thursday 15 March, St Patrick’s Day will be the first student event to take a chance on the Rhynd.
The staple features that popularised the event will remain, although on a larger scale than last year. Live band the Wild Murphys are booked for another glorious opening set of Irish-infused pub tunes, while Guinness is promised to be in ample supply. Organisers Aidan Thomson and Toby Gobourn guarantee expedited bar service, thanks to the separate speed bar for the ever-popular pints and shots. Pint swilling will certainly give way to shot taking, as the live band transitions to Edinburgh-based DJ Joe Wilson. By working with non-local acts, the event intends to differentiate itself from the standard St Andrews soiree, often headlined by the same student lineup.
In addition to music and drink, the event will feature an equally enticing programme of food trucks. Outside, Maclaurin’s Bar will provide speciality cocktails – including the thematically appropriate Irish coffee. Gourmet burger purveyor Screaming Peacock will offer their stomach-lining fare, while the Crepe Shack will be on hand for those with a sweet tooth.
With early bird tickets priced at £20, this iconic merger of Scottish and Irish heritage is not one to miss.
