It was International Womens’ Day this week, and in celebration we are giving a platform to a much deserved, friendly, and incredibly enthusiastic womens’ team that you may not have known already existed.
And that team is the University of St Andrews Womens’ Cricket team.

This sports club of just over 20 members welcomes players of any level – and they mean it. Girls from all across the world – including countries where cricket isn’t even played – have joined this club wanting to play a sport that is kind of like baseball/softball/rounders, but have stayed not because they fully understand and appreciate all the rules of cricket (does anyone?) but more because it is the “best, most welcoming, most fun, friendliest, amazingest sports club in St Andrews.”
And why is it all these things? Well, primarily, it’s because everyone in the club is just really, really nice. Club President Becky Casement made sure that every sign-up they had at the Fresher’s Sports Fair in September received a personalised email inviting them to the give-it-a-go sessions, which is a sentiment picked up by Secretary Sophie Taylor in her bright, multi-coloured, meme-filled, gif-heavy weekly emails. In fact, the whole committee strives to make everyone feel welcomed into the club, with efforts including the organisation of actually fun weekly socials (past themes including I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, Harry Potter drinking games, and The Cube), charity outreach programmes, joint games with the Men’s Cricket Club and a follow-worthy family-friendly instagram to name a few.
The club has three weekly training sessions, Tuesday and Thursday 4:30-6pm, and a brutal Saturday 9am-11am (turning up hungover is almost always a given). Attendance at all is not necessary, but I am assured that if you don’t come you’re just cheating yourself out of great training, great laughs, and greater tunes.
And, being a BUSC club, there are plenty of opportunities to play cricket against other universities across the country. With recent games in Edinburgh and Durham, the women’s cricket team are just about to start their outdoor season with upcoming matches on 21st April, 29th April, and 25th June – and the club is always looking for extra members!
So if you’re a female at St Andrews with two opposable thumbs and a basic understanding of ball sports, then why not join this fun, friendly, charitable (did I mention that they support the Change Foundation as well as International Womens’ Day?) and pretty damn cool cricket club? Seriously, why not? Why not. Why. Not.
