St Andrews is thought of as a quaint, historic town with traditional roots and values. However, Starfields transforms the Bubble into a platform of millennial cliché – a music festival. Rounding off Freshers’ Week as arguably one of the best events of the year, it is a near mandatory social event.
While at most St Andrews events students are usually advised to wear smart casual clothing or clean cut dresses, Starfields rocks the boat. In the spirit of festival fashion, you are encouraged to get “a little wild” and wear flower crowns, glitter, body paint, and generally to mimic the decor of Coachella.
With the weather and consistent possibility of rain as a hindrance, it is difficult to channel traditional festival vibes with crop tops, shorts, and strappy outfits. In St Andrews, flowy bohemian tops are paired with flared jeans and colourful headbands or flower crowns. When picking an outfit, the best advice is to think 70s. Channel your inner diva with some tight flare jeans that are sculpting but relaxed, with a floaty or off the shoulder top.
In terms of makeup, body paint and glitter are always a staple at music festivals. Copious amounts of glitter are applied to eyes, the face, and collarbones to create a mystical and exotic bohemian look, setting the tone for the outfit to follow. The only warning with body paint and glitter is the struggle to remove it post Starfields – you may or may not legitimately “shine” throughout your upcoming lectures and tutorials.
The main struggle most come into contact with when dressing for Starfields is the choice of footwear. At Coachella or Lollapalooza, most people will sport flip-flops or converse; however in Scotland, the weather brings not only frequent rain, but also frequent mud. Bearing this in mind, it is always safe to wear wellies with one’s outfit. It is very St Andrews (think Welly Ball), and your brand new Adidas will thank you later. Consequently, if you want to live on the wild side, booty heels are always encouraged, as they lengthen the legs and looking amazing with almost any outfit pairing. Ultimately, wear shoes you can dance in for hours – music festivals are all about dancing, mobility, and having fun. Don’t let poor footwear choices ruin your day!
Starfields is an incredible event showing the diversity and individuality all St Andrews students encompass. Seasoned with style and a plethora of new outfits, this music festival is characterised by its fashion. The more colour, the more life. Starfields is filled with vivacity, exuberance, and pure joy. Make your outfit imitate what the mind is feeling, and don’t be afraid to express yourself.
